fabric hanger cover tutorial

Any hanger can be covered quickly and easily in your favorite cotton fabric to dress up your closet and make finding something to wear that much more fun. Start with a plastic, metal, or wood hanger in the size you desire. I chose sturdy plastic children's hangers from The Container Store.

Trace around the body of the hanger onto a large sheet of paper. Add a 1/4 inch to the "shoulder" part of the hanger, and 1 inch straight down from the bottom of the hanger. Cut out the pattern you have just made.

Using a disappearing ink pen, trace the pattern twice onto the fabric of your choice.

Flip one of the pieces over so the wrong side of the fabric is facing up. Turn under the bottom straight edge 1/4 inch, and press.

Then, turn this same edge under another 1/4 inch, and press.

Stitch through all layers along the bottom straight edge using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Repeat the above three steps for the second piece of fabric.

Lay one of the pieces down with the wrong side facing up. Turn down the top corner, and press.

Stitch across the top corner so it will stay folded down.

Repeat the above two steps for your second fabric piece.

Line up the two fabric pieces with right sides together and pin.

Using a 5/8 inch seam allowance, stitch around one edge of the cover starting straight up from the bottom.

Stop when your stitches touch the beginning of the stitch line at the top corner.

Start stitching again straight up from the bottom of the other edge stopping again as soon as your stitches touch the beginning of the other side of the stitch line at the top corner.

Remove pins.

Clip corners.

Turn right side out, and press.

Tie a ribbon at the base of the hanger if you desire, and/or add any other embellishments you desire.
